Online shop - what you have to set up at Stripe yourself

For your shop to take money you need your own Stripe account. What we handle and what only you can do.

AdenAI can build you an online shop. Your customers' money goes straight into your own Stripe account, not through us. We are the workshop, not the till.

There is a practical reason for that. You are the merchant. The contract of sale is between you and your customer. Payouts, refunds, invoices and taxes all run through your account, and Stripe carries the fraud and chargeback risk, not us.

What only you can do

1. Create a Stripe account. Sign up at stripe.com if you do not have one. It costs nothing. Stripe earns from transaction fees.

2. Pass Stripe's verification. Stripe wants to know who you are before it pays out money. Have ready:

  • details about your business or yourself (address, legal form, tax number or VAT ID if you have one),
  • an identity document,
  • the bank account for payouts,
  • a short description of what you sell.

This happens entirely at Stripe. We never see this data and cannot help if Stripe comes back with questions.

3. Connect your account to the project. On the project, open Stripe, then Connect account. You land on a Stripe-hosted page, confirm the connection there and come back. That is it.

All we store is your account identifier, the string starting with acct_. We never see your secret key and do not store one anywhere. Even if our database were stolen, nobody could reach your Stripe account with it.

4. Wait for Stripe's green light. The Stripe page on your project shows where you stand:

Status Meaning
Onboarding not finished Stripe is still missing details from you
Details submitted, Stripe still reviewing stay on it, usually one or two days
Ready for payments your shop may take real money

Only in the last state should the shop go live. Before that you can build everything and try it with Stripe's test cards, but you cannot accept a real payment.

What else you should set at Stripe

Nobody forces you to, but skipping these bites later:

  • Customer receipts. Turn them on under settings, otherwise nobody gets a confirmation email.
  • Payment methods. Cards are on by default. For the German market, PayPal, Klarna and Giropay often decide whether a sale completes.
  • Taxes. Whether you have to charge VAT depends on your business, not on us. Stripe Tax can calculate it automatically, but you have to set it up.
  • Refunds happen in your Stripe dashboard, not with us.
  • Payout schedule. Rolling payouts are the default. Change it there if you want something else.

What we handle

  • Building the shop: products, cart, checkout, order confirmation.
  • Wiring it to your Stripe account so payments land there.
  • Tracking whether Stripe has cleared your account, and showing you that status.

What we cannot do

  • Speed up or influence your identity verification at Stripe.
  • Change anything in your Stripe account beyond processing payments.
  • Give legal advice on rights of withdrawal, terms, imprint or taxes. A shop needs those, but they do not come from us.

As of today the connection cannot be made

The code for the Stripe connection is finished, but our platform is not fully set up at Stripe yet. If you open the Stripe page on a project it says "Stripe is not configured on this server yet" and the connect button does nothing. The rest of the dashboard is unaffected.

On top of that, our shop template still has to be rebuilt for this model. It currently assumes you hand us your secret Stripe key, which is exactly what we no longer want.

So a shop that really takes money is not possible yet. Everything before that, products, design, cart, the flow up to checkout, can already be built.

And if I do not want a shop at all?

Then none of this applies. Stripe only enters the picture if your project itself takes money. What you pay for your AdenAI plan is a completely separate thing and runs through our account, not yours.
